How I have started to watch films without subtitles

I`m going to tell you a short story about how did I start to watch films without subtitles. It wasn`t easy, but made all the difference for me.

One day, a few years ago, I decided to watch the film "12 Angry men (1957)" into the original language. But I was disappointed, because I couldn't find Russian subtitles for it! At that period of time I watched films only with Russian subtitles and I thought that it was the limit for me... Anyway, I decided to improve my language skills and try to watch it later.

A few stages were determined for it:
- First stage "films without subtitles" was about learning more and more new words. The idea was pretty clear - more words you know, the more you can understand. So I started to learn words and tried to watch films with English subtitles. First weeks were terrible, hundred of new words, almost every 10 seconds I stopped the video and wrote new of them. But I was involved in this process and didn`t care about the time. Finally, I could watch my favourite films with English subtitles and understood almost everything!

- So I started the second stage: "Films completely without tips, subtitles and pauses".
First try I made on "The Matrix". And it was incredible! I understood everything! Every single word! Only one word was new for me "Scaffold", but I didn`t even look at the subtitles, just wrote it down into my notebook without stopping the film!

- But I didn`t realise that the real hell was waiting for me at the stage third "Films that I have never seen in Russian". Even for now I`ve just hope to catch the basic meaning into this type of films, but I`m trying over and over. Just sitting and watching every day: some TV series, TV shows and films without subtitles. I hope that one day I`m going to write here:

"I`ve understood everything in new foreign films without any tips!"

  1. Anton, good for you! Just never stop watching without subtitles and you'll feel the progress! And what about TV-shows? Could you recommend anything to watch (General English if possible ;) ?
